Choosing The Right Contractor

For most of us, our homes are our single largest investment and the most important decision you can make to protect that investment is choosing the right contractor. To make sure you’re properly taken care of in a time of need, here are a few helpful tips to help you make the right decision.

Step 1: Where to Begin

The roofing system is a complex combination of elements, the success of which depends on the quality of material, installation and overall construction. There are many ways to start your search for a roofing contractor that meets your individual needs. Referrals are obviously the best source for names of credible companies. Ask friends and family members who they have used in the past and if they were happy with the results. Contact your local Chamber of Commerce and your local Better Business Bureau and inquire about roofing contractors who are active in the community and for how long they have been active within the community. (It is not uncommon after a hail storm for out of town contractors to register with the local Chamber of Commerce and the BBB). You can also check with local and state licensing associations such as Abilene Area Roofing Contractors Association (AARCA).

Step 2: Meeting and Evaluating Potential Contractors

Professional contractors take pride in their work and their standing within the community, they should be enthusiastic about the possibility of helping you with your roofing needs. A professional contractor will be happy to meet with you to discuss various aspects of the job and to provide you with the information you may need to make the right decision.

  • Business Name and Address – A good contractor will readily provide the company’s permanent business address and telephone number.
  • Experience – The contractor should be fully trained and knowledgeable of products and installation procedures to be used for your particular project. The age of a company can also help you determine their ability to successfully complete your project.
  • Insurance coverage – A contractor should carry general liability insurance. Beware of bids that appear to be too good to be true, as this may be an indication of non-coverage or incomplete coverage.
  • References – Your contractor’s past could determine your future, ask for a list of completed projects including names and numbers of past clients.

Step 3 – Utilizing Contractors Product Knowledge

Your contractor should have up-to-date knowledge of quality products for your project. Ask questions about different shingles such as brand names, life spans, styles, design, available colors, and warranties. Selecting the right products is as important as selecting the right contractor.

Step 4 – Sit Back and Relax

A little well-planned research up front will undoubtedly save you lots of time and trouble later on.
